UAlbany Features Susan Taylor, the Soul of "Essence" Magazine, as Keynote Speaker at Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon

Taylor was considered the soul of Essence for over more than decades, serving as the popular magazine's editor-in-chief for 19 years and publications director for seven.

ALBANY, N.Y. (February 5, 2010) -- Essence magazine Editor-in-Chief Emerita Susan L. Taylor will be the guest speaker for the University at Albany�s 31st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at noon in the Campus Center Ballroom.

During the luncheon, which is free and open to the public, Taylor will discuss the skills needed to balance an individual�s beliefs, behaviors, relationships and career challenges in today�s society. She will also urge students to help fulfill Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.�s legacy of peace and community service.

�We are privileged to welcome Susan Taylor, whose elegance and dedication can be an inspiration to our students and the entire campus community,� said President George M. Philip.

Taylor was considered the soul of Essence for over more than decades, serving as the popular magazine�s editor-in-chief for 19 years and publications director for seven years. During her tenure, Taylor penned the popular �In the Spirit� column and wrote the best-selling books In the Spirit: The Inspirational Writings of Susan L. Taylor and Lessons in Living and Confirmation: The Spiritual Wisdom That Has Shaped Our Lives.

Now, as the founder of National Cares Mentoring Movement, she shares her inspirational passion for empowering African Americans in a call to action to recruit mentors for at-risk youth.

The University at Albany will also celebrate Black History Month with other events, which are free and open to the public, including:

  • Diva Cello Recital Concert, Wednesday, February 10, 7 p.m., Recital Hall Performing Arts Center.
  • Lecture on South Africa by Vincent G. Porfirio, assistant dean at The Sage College of Albany, Wednesday, February 17, 3 p.m., Humanities 039.
