Initiatives For Women (IFW), a program that provides annual awards for women to support their educational and professional goals at the University at Albany, will present their Eighth Annual Awards Celebration on Thursday, July 19, at 3 p.m. in the Campus Center Assembly Hall on the University's Uptown Campus. The event honors the 2001 IFW award recipients. It is free and open to the public.

IFW supports endowed scholarships, fellowships, excellence awards for students, internships and training programs, career planning and advisement, and research on women and women's issues. The awards will be presented by UAlbany President Karen R. Hitchcock.

"IFW awards make a real difference in the lives of the recipients, not only by providing the necessary funds for a certain project or endeavor, but also by giving motivation and validation to their personal and professional goals," said Carol Bullard, UAlbany's assistant vice president for Corporate and Foundation Relations and chair of IFW.

Past recipients of IFW awards have worked to improve their lives in many different ways and this year's recipients are no exception. Among those honored this year are:

Laurie Keefer, a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology program, who will use her award to study the use of non-drug alternatives to Hormone Replacement Therapy.

Joyce Keyes, a Ph.D. student in Public Administration who has a reading disability, will use her award to help cover the costs of a tape recorder and paid readers.

Chrislene Adams, an M.S. student in Special Education and a single mother of four children, received an award to cover the cost of childcare while she finishes her degree.

Melissa Henneman, an undergraduate biology major, received an award to help pay for a summer field ecology course at the Huyck Preserve.
