Three major American authors affiliated with Conjunctions magazine—novelist and mystery writer Bradford Morrow, poet Ann Lauterbach, and bestselling horror writer Peter Straub—will read from their work on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center on the UAlbany uptown campus, 1400 Washington Avenue, Albany. Free and open to the public, the event is sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute.

PROFILE
Three distinguished authors who are editors of Conjunctions, an award-winning literarymagazine based at Bard College, will read from their work at the University at Albany. Conjunctions has been called, “One of our most distinctive and valuable literary magazines…. innovative, daring, indispensable, and beautiful” (PEN American Center), and “a showplace for some of the most exciting and demanding writers now at work” (Washington Post).

Novelist, essayist, and poet Bradford Morrow is the magazine’s founding editor. His latest novel is The Forgers (2014), a literary thriller about books, murder, and forgery. Publishers Weekly named it a Top 10 Mystery/Thriller for 2014. Joyce Carol Oates called it, “brilliantly written…. lethally enthralling.” The NPR reviewer said, “Like the love child of Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle . . . delightful to read.” The Washington Post reviewer called it, “An excellent suspense novel,” and said, “Bradford Morrow is, quite skillfully, paying homage to one of Agatha Christie’s most famous whodunits. Yet even then, he offers a few twists of his own and will keep all but the most astute mystery aficionado guessing about the truth until the end.”

Other novels by Morrow include The Almanac Branch (1991), a PEN/Faulkner Award finalist, and The Diviner’s Tale (2011). For his work at Conjunctions, Morrow received the PEN/Magid Award for Magazine Editing.

Ann Lauterbach, poet, MacArthur Fellowship winner, and contributing editor of Conjunctions, is celebrated for poetry of ravishing intensity. Novelist Don DeLillo has said, “Ann Lauterbach’s poetry is quantum-packed inside its own reality, releasing beams of light and time that bend across the world of human beauty….”  Her recent collections include Under the Sign (2013), and Or to Begin Again (2009), a National Book Award finalist. In a review of Under the Sign, the American Reader said, “Ann Lauterbach is an experimental poet in the best sense of the word. Erudite yet curious, readable yet uncompromising, her poetry explores the foggy terrain between self-expression and social justice. “

Lauterbach codirects the Writing Division of the MFA program at Bard College.

Peter Straub, bestselling novelist and contributing editor of Conjunctions is one of America’s preeminent authors of horror fiction. Straub received the Horror Writers Association’s Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2005. Five of his novels have also won the Bram Stoker Award, including A Dark Matter (2010), In the Night Room (2004), Lost Boy, Lost Girl (2003), Mr. X (1999), and The Throat (1983). The San Francisco Chronicle reviewer said that A Dark Matter, “leaves one satisfied, still eager for the next book by one of the most adroit masters of the supernatural thriller.”

Other bestselling novels by Straub include Koko (1988), Ghost Story (1979) and Julia (1975), as well as two coauthored with Stephen King: Black House (2001) and The Talisman (1984).  A collection of selected stories, Interior Darkness, is due to appear in February 2016.
