Since the Healthy Heart program
wants to encourage walking
as a routine activity,
it is logical to connect this
concept with planning and
development of sidewalks, streets
and trails. Unfortunately, community
‘health’ is not currently considered
a performance measure for public
works infrastructure, so a
new approach to bringing
together the health and planning
communities in needed.

While it is not certain that
there is a relationship between
providing sidewalks, trails
and bicycle facilities and specific
improvements in the conditions of
cardiovascular disease, there is
sufficient evidence to indicate that
communities would benefit from
infrastructure improvements that
encourage a more active lifestyle.
