Communication
Communication in the 21st century: “ubiquitous, complex, consequential”
- Poole & Walther
The Department of Communication is a community of researchers and educators working to advance fundamental knowledge about processes of human communication, and prepare students, at both the undergraduate and graduate level, to analyze and participate in communication practices in a variety of social contexts.
The Department has a distinctive commitment to engaged scholarship - at the community level and in the larger context of participation in institutions of a democratic society - and to engaged teaching and learning.
We bring diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives to solving problems generated by an increasingly interdependent and pluralistic society and persistent social inequalities, with the goal of designing communication processes that enhance participation in social systems that support health, citizenship, and well-being.
