Core Courses


Learning and Teaching Computer Science Principles

Strengthen your  K-12 computer science classroom teaching strategies and master the AP  Computer Science Principles curriculum to  help your high school students achieve their desired scores on  advanced placement exams. Course material covers the seven core concepts of computer science  and the six computational thinking practices.

Educational Computing in the Math/Science Class

Get up to date on best practices for using  technology to teach mathematics and science in K-12 classrooms. This course covers helpful ways to integrate computers and calculators into your lesson plans and provides you with the opportunity to complete an individual applied learning project. 

Teaching Computing in the Secondary School

This course further prepares you to teach the AP Computer Science Principles course and other computing and information technology courses that meet the needs of high school students interested in advancing their programming skills. Coursework includes material on standards and assessment.

Choose two courses in your area(s) of interest.

Optional Concentrations


If both of your electives are in one of the areas of study below, you'll earn a concentration in that area. Otherwise, you can choose electives from different areas without earning a concentration.

Earning a concentration prepares you to compete for certain teaching and leadership positions in growing departments of computer science and information technology in public, charter, and private K-12 schools.

Courses for this certificate are offered entirely online. Certificate credits can be applied to the MS in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology at UAlbany.

  • Three letters of recommendation

Completed applications that meet all admission criteria are typically reviewed within two weeks of receipt.
