Whether you are a current UAlbany student enrolled in a graduate program in the social sciences, public health or related fields or a member of the community, such as a state employee, this certificate program will prepare you for what’s next.

You will gain the theoretical, substantive and methodological knowledge of how population processes operate in societies and how they interrelate with other social processes.

18 credits plus one graduate-level statistics course:

Core Courses

  • Introduction to Demography
  • Demographic Techniques


Special Topics Courses

  • Two Special Topics in Demography courses OR
  • One Special Topics in Demography course and one Demography Internship

Demography Electives

  • Two additional demography related substantive or methods courses in any field


Statistics

  • One graduate-level statistics course in a related field

International Students

This degree is designated as a STEM program. International students maintaining F-1 status are allowed to apply for up to 12 months of post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) following completion/graduation from their degree program. Currently, this degree program is also designated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as an eligible degree for the F-1 STEM OPT work authorization extension; students who secure qualifying employment may be eligible to apply for the STEM OPT extension for a cumulative total of up to 36 months of F-1 OPT work authorization.

  • Statement of Goals- The statement is generally one to two pages discussing why you want to enroll in the program and what you wish to get out of the program. It should include a brief description of the applicant's field of interest, related background and career goals.

Application Information for Current UAlbany Students

Current UAlbany students should login to MyUAlbany and follow these steps to apply:

  1. In the MyUAlbany portal, select the Graduate Education tab at the top of the page.
  2. At the bottom left of the page under Application and Graduation Information, select Supplemental Degree Application.
  3. Click on the Supplemental Degree Application icon.
  4. Click the Add to Cart button.
  5. Fill out the form. 
    1. Select your current degree level and current program name.
    2. Be sure to enter "Graduate Certificate in Demography" in the Requested Supplemental Degree Program Name field
    3. Select CGS in the Requested Supplemental Degree dropdown menu
  6. Click Continue to submit your supplemental application form.
  7. Select Checkout to submit your payment information.

This program may include an internship, field experience, study abroad component or clinical experience requirement. Students who have previously been convicted of a felony are advised that their prior criminal history may impede their ability to complete the requirements of certain academic programs and/or to meet licensure requirements for certain professions. If applicants have concerns about this matter, please contact the Dean’s Office of the intended academic program.
