ALBANY, N.Y. (February 1, 2008) -- Mary Ellen Mallia has been named the University at Albany's Director of Environmental Sustainability. The newly-created position is designed to support UAlbany's sustainability efforts including its "Go Green" initiative, environmental education and policies.
At UAlbany, Mallia will help advance strategic planning initiatives related to campus environmental issues, as well as work with various academic departments and student groups to develop, implement and coordinate environmental initiatives, such as UAlbany's recycling and energy conservation programs. She holds a doctorate in ecological economics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Mallia resides in Princetown with her husband, Bennett, and five-year-old daughter, Mylea.
The University at Albany is dedicated to promoting sustainability by encouraging the conservation and efficient use of natural resources on campus, initiating projects that both reduce the University's environmental impact and set an example of sustainable living for the community at large. It also seeks to increase awareness of the campus' responsibility to operate in an environmentally sustainable manner; teach the principles of sustainable living to its students and colleagues; and demonstrate the economic and other benefits of sustainable living to all.
