International Affairs Graduate Degree Program
Master of International Affairs
The Master of International Affairs (MIA) degree offered by the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy is a professional master’s degree that provides graduate students a broad educational foundation in international relations theory, policy analysis, economics, management and quantitative methods as well as oral and written communications skills that will prepare them for careers in international affairs.
Program of Study (14 courses)
1. Six Core Courses (24 credits),
- Int 501 Global Governance
- Int 502 Economics for Global Affairs
- Int 503 Quantitative Approaches to International Affairs
- Int 505 Global Security
- Int 506 International and Comparative Public Management
- Int 507 Statistics for International Affairs Managers and Policy Analysts
2. Three Elective courses in a concentration (9 - 12 credits),
- Diplomacy and Global Governance Concentration
- Global Economic Policy Concentration (currently unavailable)
- Global Public Management Concentration
- Global and Homeland Security Concentration
- Students may also develop their own concentration of at least 3 courses with permission of the International Affairs program director.
3. Two Additional elective courses (6 - 8 credits),
4. A capstone project (Int 597, 4 credits),
5. Professional Internship or Career Experience, and
6. Professional Development Module (Int 596, 0 credits, 2 registrations).
International Affairs Courses
International Affairs courses are taught by members of Rockefeller College’s International Affairs faculty both on the University at Albany campus and at SUNY facilities in New York City as well as via synchronous distance learning by instructors located in both locations.
Career Experience Requirements
The career experience requirement may be met either by providing documentation of two years entry level professional experience related to international affairs, concurrent full-time employment related to international affairs, or by obtaining an internship related to international affairs in the amount of 400 hours. Students must submit a new Experience to the Office of Career Development and complete the approval process in order to start their internship.
Other Available Courses
Certain political science, public administration and public policy graduate courses as well as courses offered by other graduate programs may be taken to fulfill elective requirements.
