Social Welfare Joint M.S.W./Ph.D. Program in Social Welfare

The joint M.S.W./Ph.D. program permits exceptionally qualified students "with a high level of demonstrated academic competence, leadership potential, and a strong interest in scholarship in social welfare research" to reduce the 96 serial credits required for the M.S.W. and Ph.D. programs in Social Welfare to 87 credits.

2. Concentration Courses (9 - 12 credits depending on concentration):

MACRO Concentration -12 credits required:

Clinical Concentration - 9 credits required consisting of three Advanced Clinical Practice courses

3. Doctoral Courses - 15 credits required:

• One Advanced Data Analytics course (3)
• Ssw 831 Social Work Teaching and Pedagogy (3)
• Ssw 865 Qualitative Social Work Research (3)
• Ssw 866 Preparation for Scholarly Writing in Social Work (3)

4. Supporting and Elective Courses (6-9 credits): Appropriate courses totaling at least 6 - 9 graduate credits, depending on concentration, to complete the master’s concentration and to develop the doctoral social welfare problem and practice intervention area of study.

Additional Requirements

Additionally, all students must:

1. Have a satisfactory record in all course and seminar study;
2. Complete satisfactorily the Language or Computer Proficiency requirement;
3. Complete satisfactorily the Doctoral Comprehensive Essay;
4. Submit an acceptable dissertation based on independent research; and
5. Complete at least two acceptable substantive courses outside of the School of Social Welfare.

Please note: This program requires an internship, field experience, study abroad component, or clinical experience requirement. Students who have previously been convicted of a felony are advised that their prior criminal history may impede their ability to complete the requirements of certain academic programs and/or to meet licensure requirements for certain professions.
