Global Health Studies Certificate Program

The Graduate Certificate in Global Health Studies was designed to attract both current MPH students and practicing health professionals who are interested in expanding their understanding of global health issues and was developed in response to several trends including the interconnectedness of the world today; increased awareness of the spread and impact of health crises and risks worldwide; and as part of the growing global focus of the UAlbany curriculum. Global health involves the most fundamental values of a society: social justice and health equity; collaboration and partnerships; capacity building; and ethical reasoning. Students of global health will acquire competencies that can be applied in both international and domestic settings, including project management, strategic  analysis, and social, cultural, and political awareness.

The program requires the completion of 15 graduate course credits or 5 courses, all of which are available and applicable in the MPH program.  However, students should realize that some of the courses in the certificate program have prerequisites that they will need to satisfy either through equivalent coursework or background.

Required Courses:

• Hpm 656    Comparative Health Systems: A Global Perspective (3)
• Ehs 607      Global Environmental Health Policy (3)
• Epi 630       Global Perspectives in Epidemiology (3) OR
  Epi 605       Infectious Disease Epidemiology (3)    

Choose one of the following courses:

• Hpm 536    Global Maternal and Child Health (3)
• Hpm 655    Global Health Economics (3)
• Hpm 575    Universal Health Care in Costa Rica (3)
• Ehs 545      Global Climate Change, Extreme Weather and Public Health (3)
• A graduate-level course with global health relevance, subject to approval by the program director

Please Note: Not all elective courses are available online. Please check the Schedule of Classes. No more than one course can be applied to multiple certificates. This program is eligible for federal financial aid effective Summer 2020 and forward.
