SARS Advisory for Commencement Weekend
May 12, 2003
Dear University at Albany Students/Faculty/Staff:
Commencement activities on the UAlbany campus will begin on Saturday, May 17. There will be well over 10,000 guests in attendance at the various celebratory events taking place that weekend all over our campus. If you have guests coming to UAlbany from a SARS endemic area (currently China, Hong Kong and Taiwan), please read the following advisory very carefully:
The University at Albany strongly urges that any person who has recently resided in or visited a SARS-affected area not attend Commencement ceremonies or related activities if he or she develops, or has been in close contact with anyone in the previous 10 days with, any of the following symptoms:
* Fever greater than 38.0 degrees C (100.4 degrees F) or
* Cough or
* Shortness of breath or
* Difficulty breathing or
* Headache or
* Muscle aches
We ask students, their families and guests to err on the side of caution. If there is any doubt about the presence of any symptom in a guest who has traveled to the United States from a SARS endemic country, he or she should not attend Commencement or other public events.
Commencement guests of students who are concerned that they may be developing symptoms of SARS should CALL the University Health Center for advice (518)442-5454. They should NOT go directly to the University Health Center unless instructed to do so.
The most up-to-date information regarding this epidemic continues to be found at the following websites: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or World Health Organization (WHO).
Thank you.
Leslie Lawrence, M.D.
Director, University Health Center
