Help UAlbany Defeat Brown this Saturday.
Dont let Hurricane Isabel keep you from cheering on the Great Danes to victory this Saturday as they meet Brown University at 1:00pm at University Field. The first 500 fans will receive a free commemorative football championship T-shirt, courtesy of the Universitys Student Association. UAlbany captured the Northeast Conference and ECAC football titles in 2002. This Saturdays home game is the first time the UAlbany football team has met an Ivy League opponent.
Following last Saturday's 28-10 NEC victory over Central Connecticut State, the Great Danes remain ranked in both The Sports Network and Football Gazette Division I-AA Mid-Major national football polls. UAlbany is fourth in the Football Gazette poll, and is ranked sixth by The Sports Network.
The Great Danes, who won their conference opener for the fourth time in the last five years, used strong defensive play to defeat Central Connecticut State. UAlbany's defense established the program's Division I-AA standards by allowing 74 total yards, including one net rushing yard, and six first downs. Fullback Jon George rushed for a career-high 113 yards, while tailback Gary Jones added 112 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
The Brown football program is celebrating its 125th anniversary, playing their first intercollegiate game in 1878. The Bears feature senior quarterback Kyle Slager in a pro-offense attack. Slager, who transferred from Arizona, ranked fifth nationally among the I-AA leaders in passing last season. He completed 230 of 340 attempts for 2,609 yards and 19 touchdowns.
