UAlbanys archivist Geoffrey Williams relates that there was a beloved tradition associated with the University at Albany, back when it was called the New York State College for Teachers. The tradition began around 1913 and actually lasted into the 1960s. It was a rivalry between the freshman and sophomore classes that eventually included successive classes identified with colors and mascots. No one knows how early the colors were introduced, but the student handbooks of the 1930s were printed in colors that rotated blue, green, red, and yellow. In the 1940s class colors and mascots arrived on the scene. There were the yellow jackets, green gremlins, red devils (as in horned devils) and the blue jays, said Williams. When a senior class graduated, they passed along their color and mascot to the incoming freshman class. The classes would have their own class song, fight song and a large banner that featured the class numerals and mascot. The rivalry began on what was then called Campus Day in late October and lasted throughout the year until Moving-Up-Day just before Commencement.
UAlbany freshmen students are reviving tradition this fall with the Clash of the Quads a rivalry between teams from Indian and State residence quads on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11 and 12. Teams from each residence will compete in a series of events for the championship. Among the list of events are kickball, egg-on-spoon relays, musical chairs, 3-legged races, volleyball, seed spitting contests and a tug of war. Minerva, UAlbanys enduring symbol will crown the winners during a formal ceremony on Oct. 12.
