Syndicated in more than 450 newspapers by the Washington Post Writers Group, Ellen Goodman has been an innovative force in American journalism. The first journalist to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1980 for distinguished commentary, she has critiqued the tumult of social change and its impact on families, shattering the mold of men writing exclusively about politics. Goodman will speak on February 25 at 8 p.m. at Page Hall on UAlbanys downtown campus (135 Western Ave.) as part of the Visiting Writer Series sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute celebrating 20 years at the University at Albany.
Some of Goodmans best columns of recent years have been collected in the new book, Paper Trail: Common Sense in Uncommon Times (February 2004). The collection features commentaries on the Clinton scandals, the "amBushing of America," the War on Terrorism, the "dotcom" boom and bust, media culture, Viagra, Botox, "reality TV" and other cultural phenomena.
In addition to the Pulitzer, she has received the Distinguished Writing Award of the American Society of Newspaper Editors (1980), the Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award (1988), and the National Womens Caucus Presidents Award (1993).
