For the last four years, Applyrs has been an advisor with Delta GEMS (Growing & Empowering Myself Successfully), a community service project of the Albany Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The group meets on UAlbany’s Uptown Campus each month.

After seeing the devastation left by the storm, students rallied on Facebook to support Project Sandy. The effort was begun by UAlbany Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) counselor Claudio Gomez.
