PostSecret, Cabaret Highlight Spring 2011 Arts Calendar at UAlbany
PostSecret creator Frank Warren will speak at UAlbany on Feb. 8, 2011 as part of the University's Sexuality Week.
ALBANY, N.Y. (January 06, 2011) --
PostSecret -- the international phenomenon which has spawned five New York Times bestselling books -- and the Oscar and Tony award-winning musical Cabaret highlight the spring 2011 Arts & Culture events at the University at Albany's Performing Arts Center (PAC).
In November 2004, Frank Warren distributed 3,000 postcards to strangers. He invited people to write down a secret anonymously and mail it to him. Each secret had to be true and something that had never been shared with another person. To date, Warren has received more than 450,000 postcards and they continue to come at a rate of about 1,000 per week. Every month, more than seven million people visit the award winning PostSecret website.
On Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, as part of the University's Sexuality Week celebration, Warren will share the stories behind the memorable postcards and secrets he has received. Following the presentation, Warren will meet audience members and sign copies of his books in the Futterer Lounge. Warren's lecture is presented by the Middle Earth Peer Assistance Program, the PAC, and the University Counseling Center. The visit is supported by the Holiday Inn Express, the Student Association and University Auxiliary Services. Tickets are $15 or free for UAlbany students (one ticket per ID).
An exhibition based on Warren' latest book, Confessions on Life, Death and God, which features more than 270 artfully crafted postcards on a myriad of private thoughts will be on display from January 19 through February 11 in the PAC. The exhibition is organized by International Arts & Artists of Washington, D.C. in cooperation with Warren, and is presented by the PAC with support from University Auxiliary Services and the Grandma Moses Fund through the Alumni Association.
From April 1-9, 2011, UAlbany's Department of Theatre will present Cabaret in the PAC's Lab Theatre. |
From April 1-9, UAlbany's Department of Theatre will present Cabaret in the PAC's Lab Theatre. The musical, based on the book by Joe Masteroff, portrays the dazzling, decadent, and tawdry Kit Kat Club in the heart of Berlin at the dawn of the 1930s. Cabaret won the 1967 Tony Award for Best Musical. The film version took home eight Academy Awards in 1973, including Best Director, Actress, and Supporting Actor.
Special cabaret table seating brings the audience into the action as the entire Lab Theatre is transformed for the event. Tickets are $18, or $12-15 for students, faculty, staff and seniors.
