NanoCollege selects 24 exceptional students for prestigious Summer Internship Program
|
Twenty-four exceptional undergraduate students -- including 17 New York State residents from the Capital Region, Hudson Valley, Mohawk Valley and the Finger Lakes -- will spend the summer exploring the emerging science of nanotechnology after being selected to participate in the prestigious Summer Internship Program at the University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE).
The pioneering hands-on program, which began this week and runs through August 12, gives student interns a unique opportunity to engage in innovative nanotechnology research projects as a means of supporting careers in nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience and the nanotechnology industry.
The students were selected from a highly competitive pool of more than 130 applicants, and possess academic backgrounds that range from the physical, chemical, biological and computer sciences to mathematics and engineering. Collectively, they are pursuing their undergraduate degrees at a variety of colleges and universities, including the UAlbany NanoCollege, University at Albany, Brown University, University of Buffalo, Clarkson University, SUNY Geneseo, University of Maryland, Purdue University and Vassar College.
"The outstanding students selected for the UAlbany NanoCollege's prestigious Summer Internship Program embody the bright young scientific minds that are critical to enabling the 21st century innovation economy," said Dr. Alain E. Kaloyeros, Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of CNSE. "Through this initiative, the students will receive pioneering education, conduct leading-edge research, and interact with CNSE’s global corporate partners, and CNSE will further build the world-class workforce necessary to grow New York’s nanotechnology industry."
Students from schools such as Vassar, Brown and the University at Buffalo are among the 2011 summer interns. |
Each intern will work on research programs for CNSE and/or its corporate partners; engage with CNSE faculty, staff, post-doctoral researchers and graduate students; and interact with industrial experts through weekly seminars and public presentation of research results. The capstone of the internship program is a public poster presentation showcasing each intern’s summer research project.
CNSE is the first college in the world dedicated to education, research, development, and deployment in the emerging disciplines of nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience, and nanoeconomics. CNSE's Albany NanoTech Complex is the most advanced research enterprise of its kind at any university in the world. With over $6.5 billion in high-tech investments, the 800,000-square-foot complex attracts corporate partners from around the world and offers students a one-of-a-kind academic experience.
The UAlbany NanoCollege houses the only fully-integrated, 300mm wafer, computer chip pilot prototyping and demonstration line within 80,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms. More than 2,500 scientists, researchers, engineers, students, and faculty work on site, from companies including IBM, AMD, GlobalFoundries, SEMATECH, Toshiba, Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, ASML, Novellus Systems, Vistec Lithography and Atotech. An expansion currently in the planning stages is projected to increase the size of CNSE's Albany NanoTech Complex to over 1,250,000 square feet of next-generation infrastructure housing over 105,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms and more than 3,750 scientists, researchers and engineers from CNSE and global corporations.
