Academics in Focus: Art History at UAlbany
The Art History program offers a challenging and diverse curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree, with students studying a wide range of historical periods, cultures, themes and media. In addition, students develop skills for critically evaluating and writing about works of art within their historical and cultural contexts. Students may take such diverse courses as Women in Art, Chinese Painting, Criticism of the Postmodern Era, and Significant Cinema Directors.
Many students take advantage of opportunities beyond campus, ranging from internships at area museums to on-site archaeological field work in Europe. The undergraduate major has a strong tradition of its graduates advancing to master's and doctoral programs in art history. Alums also go on to a number of positions within the art world, including curator, critic, writer, and art consultant for major auction houses.
"Finding my way to art history and internships at the University at Albany opened me up to all the different occupations that I could have that fed my excitement about being with artists," said Ian Berry, '95, associate director and curator of the Tang Museum at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. "As a curator, I'm having conversations and dialogues with artists while they're making new work."
"It's not just art and art history: it is art, history, language, culture," said Jasmine Burns, '11, highlighting the rigorous nature of the program. "It's great because there is a lot of going to galleries, going to openings, getting to know people in the modern arts scene."
