ALBANY, N.Y. (September 14, 2011) -- Three University at Albany freshmen, Camy Liang, Elizabeth Maldonado, and Gabriel Martinez, have won this year’s Explore UAlbany raffle. Thanks to a generous donation from SEFCU, each has received a University at Albany Bookstore gift certificate for $500 toward the cost of textbooks this semester. The September 1 drawing was open to incoming freshmen and transfer students who attended an Explore UAlbany lecture August 26 as part of the Great Dane Beginnings Opening Weekend.
Liang, an intended business major from New Hyde Park, N.Y., hopes to one day earn an MBA and work in marketing. She particularly enjoyed the Hon. Joseph Sheehan’s business law lecture, which she felt was lively, exciting, and engaging. Maldonado, an intended political science major from Bronx, N.Y., is considering a future in law and also enjoyed Sheehan’s lecture. Maldonado said she used the opportunity to expand her horizons by attending a lecture in a field other than political science. Martinez of Queens, N.Y., who is considering a double major in English and economics, attended Professor Jeanette Altarriba’s psychology lecture at Explore UAlbany. He was enthusiastic about his UAlbany experience to date, commenting on the friendliness and helpfulness of everyone he had encountered. “UAlbany has been very good to me already,” said Martinez.
Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies Sue Faerman and University at Albany Bookstore Manager Heather White congratulated the raffle winners on their strong academic start. All three students plan to continue to explore UAlbany by joining various teams and clubs, and attending events on campus.
