New Education Trust Report Highlight Increased Graduation Rates for Underrepresented Students at University at Albany
ALBANY, N.Y. (October 29, 2012) -- A national report released by The Education Trust recognizes the University at Albany for increased graduation rates among African-American students. "Advancing to Completion: Increasing Degree Attainment by Improving Graduation Rates and Closing Gaps for African-American Students" highlights colleges and universities that have been narrowing the graduation-rate gaps of underrepresented students.

Consistently noted as posting equitable success rates for their black and white students, the report considers UAlbany a "no-gap" school. From 2004 to 2010, UAlbany had the 8th highest percentage of African-American student graduation rates among all public colleges, equaling or exceeding white student graduation rates.
"UAlbany makes a concerted effort both inside and outside the classroom in which administrators work to bridge students' academic life and residential life," explains Susan Phillips, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. "They do so by actively engaging faculty in student affairs, setting explicit learning objectives for student activities and services, and convening regular meetings between academic and student affairs staff to identify students at risk of dropping out."
According to the report, by 2018, the nation is projected to need 22 million new college degrees, while 63 percent of jobs are projected to require a postsecondary degree. The only way to make progress toward that goal is to improve performance among diverse student populations. While nearly 40 percent of white 25- to 29-year-olds have attained at least a bachelor’s degree, attainment among young African Americans is only one-half that rate.
