UAlbany Invites Community to Campus to Celebrate Earth Day
Family Activities, Guided Nature Walk, Food & Art Festival among activities
ALBANY, N.Y. (April 16, 2013) -- On Sunday, April 21 from 1 – 4 p.m., the University at Albany will host the first annual “Family Earth Day” designed to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day and to raise community awareness about recycling, the atmosphere and environmental science research at University Hall on the uptown campus. CBS-6 morning meteorologist Nick Johnston will serve as guest speaker for the family-friendly event aimed at children and teens to include activities such as atmospheric science demonstrations, cloud viewing, cloud art a traveling nitrogen game, bean planting and trash sorting.
UAlbany's Family Earth Day will be held as part of the University’s collaboration with the National Earth Science Teachers Association (NESTA). UAlbany Professor of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences Roberta Johnson currently serves as executive director at NESTA. The organization is home to "Windows to the Universe," one of the world’s most popular Earth and space science education websites, visited by millions of educators, parents and students each year.
Registration is preferred, and those who register by April 18 will receive a free subscription to the Windows to the Universe science education website. Parking is also free in the Student Gold Lot at State Quad.
In addition to the Family Earth Day event, UAlbany will also with a number of additional activities through the end of April including:
- Earth & Wellness Day, April 18, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Campus Center Ballroom: The event will feature free health screenings, nature-themed exhibitors, a clothing exchange to benefit City Mission in Albany, a student fair and therapy dogs.
- Earth Day Food and Art Festival, April 20, 1-5 p.m., Liberty Terrace: The festival will feature live music, local food, and arts and crafts displays. Nearly 50 students will compete to make a rendering of the UAlbany campus in a cardboard-building contest.
- Farm to Table Dinner, April 20, 5 p.m.: Hosted by The World of Environmental Sustainability Living Learning Community and UAlbany Biological Sciences Professor Gary Kleppel. The event will feature local dishes representing the various cultures of UAlbany students.
- Guided Nature Walk by the Liberty Terrace Pond, April 22, 12-12:45 p.m.: A guided nature walk will feature Liberty Terrace, UAlbany’s environmentally sustainable student housing complex, and the Purple Path, the University’s dedicated walking and jogging trail. Upgrades to the path recently included the southern portion of the campus through Liberty Terrace, by Indian Pond, and to the Boor Sculpture Studio.
