Advion Co-Founder, Chairman Jack Henion, ’72, Provides Keynote Address at UAlbany’s Graduate Commencement Ceremony and Receives Honorary Degree

ALBANY, N.Y. (May 8, 2013) - Dr. Jack Henion, ’72, a leading scientist in the pharmaceutical industry lauded for his contributions to chemistry analysis, will receive an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater and deliver the University at Albany’s graduate commencement address on Saturday, May 18 at 9 a.m. in SEFCU Arena.

Henion is the co-founder, chief scientific officer and Chairman of Advion, a globally recognized firm in the development of automated, chip-based mass spectrometry technology. He created Advion, which provides bioanalytical services to the pharmaceutical industry, based on the novel techniques developed within his Cornell University laboratory. With sales and support offices in North America, Europe and Japan, Advion is a global firm with a client base representing leading pharmaceutical companies, government life science research agencies and universities.

Henion is credited with 11 patents and has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals. He has been recognized for his contributions to analytical chemistry by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and leading European universities.

Henion co-founded Advion BioSciences, Inc. in 1993 with the vision to become a leading provider of bioanalytical contract services to the pharmaceutical industry. This status was attained in 2011 prior to the sale of its contract drug development laboratory business to Quintiles, the world’s largest provider of biopharmaceutical development services and commercial outsourcing services. Pioneers within the industry, Advion, Inc. offers a variety of mission critical systems and consumables for life science research. Advion continues to expand its diverse portfolio of innovative microfluidic and mass spec – based products for the life science industry.

In addition to his work at Advion, Dr. Henion managed a major research laboratory at Cornell University, where he served as a professor of toxicology for more than 26 years and is now Emeritus Professor of Analytical Toxicology. Under his leadership and vision, Advion Bioanalytical Labs, a Quintiles company, has established itself as one of the largest and most respected LC/MS contract laboratories in the world while Advion, Inc. is a leader in chip-based nanoelectrospray mass spectrometry.

Dr. Henion earned a bachelor’s degree from Alfred University, a master’s of science degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology, a doctorate from UAlbany, and completed a post-doctoral appointment at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC.

In recognition of his contributions in the field of mass spectrometry, Dr. Henion has received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Ghent, Belgium and the University of Uppsala, Sweden. In addition Dr. Henion received the CPSA 2011 Distinguished Analytical Scientist Award, the 2008 Eastern Analytical Symposium Award for Achievements in Mass Spectrometry in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of mass spectrometry, and the 2003 Martin Medal for contributions to the separation sciences coupled with mass spectrometry. Dr. Henion is also a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the Royal Society of Chemistry (BA FRSC).
