Alumna: Big Four Accounting Firm in NYC is Like a UAlbany ‘Home Away from Home’

Alexis Imprescia, B.S. ’10, MS ’11, found UAlbany to be the springboard to her position at Ernst & Young

ALBANY, N.Y. (September 24, 2013) — Alexis Imprescia came to college determined to work someday in the financial center of the world, New York City. Her game plan? Graduate from a top business school in New York State.

“I enrolled at UAlbany because of the great reputation of its business program and its location, and I definitely made the right choice,” said Imprescia, now a tax accountant in Manhattan with one of “The Big Four” international accounting firms, Ernst & Young. “Where else would be the best place to be to pursue a career in New York, other than in the capital of New York?”

Imprescia is not alone among UAlbany accounting graduates enjoying careers with The Big Four – Ernst & Young, Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and KPMG — which together represent the very top of the profession. “Our best students get heavily recruited by The Big Four because they’re good,” emphasized Ingrid Fisher, chair of UAlbany’s Department of Accounting and Law.

“UAlbany has a great alumni network in Manhattan,” said Imprescia, who received her bachelor’s in accounting and her master’s in taxation. “Ernst & Young is a prime example. There are so many UAlbany alumni here that, for me, it’s almost a home away from home.”

Beyond the academic quality and diversity of the campus, Imprescia said she discovered at UAlbany an environment conducive to getting to know her mentors. “In many ways, I’m at Ernst & Young today because of the business school faculty,” she said. “They introduced me to contacts and helped me draft my resume and prepare for interviews. They really gave me a good understanding of what to expect starting out as an accountant in the business world.”

Working among her fellow accountants in Manhattan, she soon observed another advantage to her UAlbany education. “I’m working here with former students who have $40,000-plus debt — and I don’t have any debt,” she said.
