Field Hockey Sends UAlbany to its First Final Four Appearance in School History

ALBANY, N.Y. (November 17, 2014) – No. 12 University at Albany field hockey rewrote the history books defeating No. 2 Maryland 2-1 to advance to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals, on Sunday, Nov. 16. The victory earned UAlbany its first trip to a Division I Final Four in school history.

The 2014 season put UAlbany on the national field hockey radar. Its quarterfinal win against Maryland marked the highest-ranked opponent a Great Danes’ squad has ever defeated. The team earned its first program NCAA Tournament the previous day, a 2-1 win over No. 5 ranked Wake Forest in the first round. Maryland and Wake Forest combine for 11 national field hockey championships.

No. 12 UAlbany faced No. 3 UConn in the Field Hockey NCAA Tournament Final Four at College Park, Maryland on Friday, Nov. 21.

The Great Danes were defeated by the defending champions, No. 3 UConn in the Final Four at College Park, Maryland on Friday, Nov. 21. The Huskies scored less than five minutes into the first half, defeating UAlbany 1-0 to return to the NCAA Championship game. 

UAlbany concluded the season at 20-3, a single-season program record. The team rode a 14-game win streak into the NCAA semifinals. Individually, sophomore midfielder Paula Heuser led the nation in points per game (3.40) and goals per game (1.45) heading into tournament play. Sophomore goalkeeper Maxi Primus has 10 shutouts this season, including two over nationally-ranked opponents (Stanford and Maine).
