UAlbany Information Scientist Named to U.S. EPA’s National Advisory Committee

ALBANY, N.Y. (January 20, 2015) — Theresa A. Pardo, Ph.D. has been appointed to a two-year term as a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Advisory Committee (NAC). Pardo is director of the University at Albany’s Center for Technology in Government (CTG), and a research associate professor in the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy and the College of Computing and Information

The U.S. NAC advises the U.S. Representative (the Administrator of the EPA) to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation on specific U.S. government policy issues related to the implementation of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation.

The Committee is responsible for providing recommendations to help assure that business and industry, academia, and non-governmental organizations are represented in the development of U.S. policy positions regarding implementation of the Environmental Supplemental Agreements to the North American Free Trade Agreement. The Committee meets several times a year to discuss, draft, and publish a set of recommendations to inform policy decisions.

“Dr. Pardo’s expertise in information sharing, smart cities, and government transparency brings important cross-cutting perspectives to the EPA NAC’s work in climate change and sustainable communities and ecosystems, and urban initiatives, among others,” said James Dias, UAlbany’s vice president for research. “The nexus between this work and UAlbany’s research strengths in Atmospheric and Environmental Science as well as Environmental Health Sciences cannot be understated.”

Dias said, “We are delighted that Dr. Pardo is joining the ranks of UAlbany faculty who serve the nation’s National Advisory Committees. As director of CTG, she leads multi-sector and multi-disciplinary teams from the U.S. and around the world to carry out applied research and problem solving projects focused on the intersections of policy, management, and technology in the governmental context. The Center’s work has broken ground in information and knowledge sharing, open government and open data, e-government, social media policy, and mobile technologies and human services delivery.”

Pardo also serves as Open NY Adviser to New York State’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, and is a member of the NYS Department of Health’s Transparency, Evaluation and Health Information Technology (HIT) Workgroup.

In her role as president of the Digital Government Society, Pardo leads a global multi-disciplinary organization of scholars and practitioners interested in the development and impacts of digital government. Additionally, she is an international advisor to the E-Government Committee for the China Information Association and was appointed as expert advisor to the Open Data 500 Project. She has published over 130 articles, research reports, practice guides, book chapters and case studies and is the second most cited author in the global digital government scholarly community.
