UAlbany Sweeps America East Indoor Track and Field Championships

ALBANY, N.Y. (February 26, 2015) – The University at Albany track and field program continued its league dominance, claiming the men’s and women’s 2015 America East Indoor Track Championship titles at the Armory in New York City last weekend.

For the men, it was the 10th consecutive America East crown, the team’s 12th in the last 13 years. The women took home a third consecutive championship, winning five of the last six. Following the victories, each team solidified a top ten spot in the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I regional rankings.

The women compiled six event victories, scoring 197.66 points and edging UMBC, who took second place with 153 points. Junior Grace Claxton set a new championship meet record in 400 meter, winning the event in 54.17. Other individual victories included senior Michelle Anthony (60 meter hurdles) and graduate student Alexx Blumm (triple jump). The women’s 3,200 relay team also finished first with an ECAC-qualifying time of 9:16:29.

The men scored 191 points to claim the conference title, defeating second place Binghamton University by nearly 60 points. In total, the men won six events over the two-day meet, including two victories from senior Alexander Bowen in the high and triple jump. Other individual event winners included junior Taariq Jones (400 meters), junior John Thompson (500 meters) and senior John DeLallo (1,000 meters). 

Both teams were awarded the America East Coach Staff of the Year accolade, while Bowden earned the Most Outstanding Men’s Field Performer – given to the top-scoring track athlete.

With conference championships now concluded, the Great Danes visit Boston over the next two weeks. First, this weekend, for the Boston University Last Chance Meet, followed by the ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, also at Boston University on the weekend of March 6.
