UAlbany Chemist Explores Volatile World of Fluorochemical Research
University at Albany Professor of Chemistry John Welch and his research team are embarking on the study of a new type of fluorinated molecule, aliphatic fluorinated hypervalent sulfur compounds. These molecules may find wide applications in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals as well as in materials science.

University at Albany Diversity Transformation Fund Award Recipients Announced
Nine projects promoting inclusiveness at UAlbany have been selected to receive a 2015-2016 Diversity Transformation Fund Award. The projects cover a wide spectrum of subjects, from disability studies to police training guarding against implicit bias; and from social justice through social media to a series of conversations on critical race theory. -
Athletics Program Receives $10 Million
UAlbany receives a $10 million gift from The Bernard and Millie Children’s Foundation to support the football stadium, expand scholarships for student-athletes, and other athletics priorities. The foundation was created by William ’75 and Sharon (Casey) Duker, and their son William. The stadium is now Tom & Mary Casey Stadium, honoring Mrs. Duker’s parents.

Experts Advisory: Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Scientists at UAlbany’s Cancer Research Center (CRC) are examining the most deadly forms of the disease year-round, including TNBC, inflammatory breast cancer, brca-2, and claudin-low. Researchers at CRC are developing new methods to treat breast cancer, and novel dietary approaches toward breast cancer prevention.

The health care employment sector continues to grow statewide, according to the Center for Health Workforce Studies (CHWS) recent report on New York’s workforce, "The Health Care Workforce in New York, 2014: Trends in the Supply and Demand for Health Workers". -

The University at Albany and the University at Albany Foundation today launched i2M Standards, the identification and authenticity standards and independent technologies that will solve the problem of faked and forged art. -
SCJ Dean William Alex Pridemore Addresses WHO Violence Prevention Symposium
William Alex Pridemore addressed attendees of the World Health Organization’s 7th Milestones of a Global Campaign for Violence Prevention Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. The Milestones series aims to identify challenges and future priorities in violence prevention, including ways to consolidate global, regional, and national efforts. -
UAlbany Researcher Studying a Novel RNA to Decrease the Overtreatment of Breast Cancer
UAlbany Cancer Research Center post-doctoral associate Rebecca Sinnott DeVaux wins a prestigious Department of Defense award to distinguish aggressive from indolent breast cancers, in hopes of greatly lessening the degree of overdiagnosis and unnecessarily aggressive treatment, including mastectomy, for tens of thousands of women. -

UAlbany Awarded $1.4 Million to Develop Training for Substance Abuse Issues
Two federal grants support the University in developing a program to train substance abuse practitioners in delivering early intervention and treatment to people with, or at-risk of developing alcohol and drug abuse disorders, and to conduct research into prescription stimulant medication misuse among college students.

UAlbany and Albany Law School Join Forces on $1.6 Million International Health Law Project in the Middle East
UAlbany’s Global Institute for Health and Human Rights, with distinguished faculty from UAlbany’s School of Criminal Justice and Albany Law School, is awarded $1.6 million from the U.S. Agency for International Development to create an online distance-education program for Middle Eastern trainees involved in fields relating to law, health and civil society.

New Online Tool Reveals Terrorist Networks and Behavior Over Time
To enable a better understanding of how terrorist organizations network and function over time, the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism has launched the Big Allied and Dangerous online platform. The project is led by UAlbany researchers Karl Rethemeyer and Victor Asal.

UAlbany’s School of Public Health Establishes the Capital Region Medical Research Institute
The School of Public Health has received $550,000 to establish the Capital Region Medical Research Institute, which will support innovative and collaborative approaches to education, research, and medical care. The Institute is designed to bring together scientists and physicians to discover new information about healthcare treatments and practices.

President Jones, Senator Chuck Schumer and Blackstone Chief Operating Officer Tony James announce expansion of the Blackstone LaunchPad entrepreneurship program to UAlbany students. It will link them to other campuses, business communities and local entrepreneurs throughout the state to enhance an environment nurturing their future success as entrepreneurs.

University Remembers Young Alumna at October 29 Candlelight Vigil
Culminating a University-wide month-long observance of domestic violence awareness, the campus hosts a candlelight vigil in honor of a young alumna killed last spring in South Korea. The ceremony, part of a Take Back the Night Foundation evening, will commence with a moment of silence to Sunny Kim '11 and be led by Kim's UAlbany sorority Kappa Phi Lambda. -
President Jones Delivers Fall 2015 State of the University Address
To a standing room only audience in the Performing Arts Center Main Theatre, UAlbany President Robert J. Jones delivered his Fall 2015 State of the University Address. He praised faculty, staff and students for the progress made in achieving the University’s mission and invited the campus to increase its focus as a community to further accelerate its growth.

The University at Albany is leading an area collaborative network, HEARTS (Healthy Environments And Relationships That Support), to support research and services seeking to strengthen resilience in people who have experienced early childhood traumas, often referred to as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
