Candlelight Vigil Highlights Observance of Transgender Awareness Week, Nov. 14-20

ALBANY, N.Y. (November 16, 2015) – In observance of Transgender Awareness Week, happening Nov. 14-20, the University at Albany will honor fallen members of the transgender community by hosting a candlelight vigil, along with a series of events.
The candlelight vigil takes place Thursday, Nov. 19 at 9:30 p.m. at the University’s main fountain on the Uptown Campus. The ceremony, led by UAlbany’s Student Association, will pay tribute to those lost in the past year due to anti-trans violence. Current UAlbany students will read the names of each victim lost. Since the start of 2015, at least 21 transgender people have been victims of fatal violence in the United States alone.
Prior to the vigil, a panel discussion has been scheduled to talk about transgender identity and experience. It will take place in the Humanities Building, Room 109, at 8:30 p.m.
UAlbany is also hosting the latest chapter of its “Racial Justice” series, which is designed to bring the campus community together to discuss current social movements. This week’s discussion is titled “White Antiracism: A Conversation for Everyone.” It will take place on Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Campus Center Assembly Hall. Details are available here.
Lastly, on Friday, Nov. 20, the University’s Gender & Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) is inviting the campus community to join them in celebrating National Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). Vigils are taking place across the United States. View here.
