Is the Field of Education for You?

The School of Education is hosting a Special Education Information Night on February 2 at 7:30 p.m. in ED 335.

ALBANY, N.Y. (January 28, 2016) -- Have you ever considered becoming a teacher?

A career as a classroom teacher offers a unique chance to make a difference in the lives of children while providing a sense of fulfillment difficult to find in other professions. Within the field of education, special education teachers are particularly valuable. Special education teachers have a unique set of skills that allow them to succeed with students who struggle the most within the school environment.

Currently, special education is a growing field. In fact, across the country, districts are struggling with shortages of special education teachers. If you want to work in this challenging yet rewarding profession, the School of Education offers programs whose mission is to prepare reflective, principled, confident, and competent master’s level teachers who are dedicated to the success of students with exceptionalities. It offers three unique and rigorous programs of study for those who have undergraduate preparation in education, as well as for those who do not.

“UAlbany has one of the few programs in the state -- and the only one in the Capital Region -- that allows applicants who do not have teaching backgrounds to become a New York State certified teacher,” said Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Special Education Bruce Saddler.

To learn more about these programs, the Division of Special Education is hosting a Special Education Information Night on Tuesday, February 2, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in ED 335.

“Any of our three programs will well prepare you for teaching and will make you a very strong, competitive applicant for multiple teaching positions within a school, including special education (grades 1-6), elementary education (grades 1-6), and literacy (birth-grade 6). Our programs are highly regarded among administrators in the Capital Region and our placement rate for our graduates is very strong,” said Saddler.
