Mega-Bank's Scholarship Fund Creates Exciting New Study Abroad Opportunities in Latin America

March 11 application deadline for summer and semester programs at leading universities in Argentina and Brazil, funded by Santander Bank of Spain.

ALBANY, NY. (February 18, 2016) — Two of the most highly ranked private universities in Latin America have become even more affordable options for UAlbany Study Abroad students, thanks to a new scholarship from Spanish mega-bank Santander to the Center for International Education and Global Strategy.

This funding from one of Europe's largest financial institutions will support semester-length and summer programs in Argentina’s Universidad del Salvador and a summer program in Brazil’s Mackenzie University. Up to $2,500 will be awarded per scholarship, which can significantly defray the cost of studying abroad.

“These are really attractive opportunities for our students,” said Austin Powers, the Center’s program coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean. “Mackenzie Presbyterian University and the Universidad del Salvador have tremendous academic reputations and both offer a great variety of programs.” The Brazil program includes a 4-day trip to Rio de Janiero, a 3-day trip to Ubatuba, and much more. The Argentine program includes cultural immersion and intensive Spanish programs.

Powers noted that the summer program in Brazil should be particularly attractive this year, since participating students will be in São Paulo while the Olympics are happening 300 miles away in Rio de Janeiro. “We’ll be focusing on how business, marketing, and communication have been facilitated for the 2016 Olympics as well as the 2014 World Cup, since this is the first time ever that a developing country has hosted both events back-to-back,” he said.

The application deadline for these two new programs is March 11 at 5 p.m., and must be done through the World Within Reach Scholarship Fund application; students must check off the "Santander Scholarship" item on page 4.

Two other UAlbany study abroad opportunities with effective March 11 deadlines for application are:

  • The World Within Reach Scholarship Fund: Scholarships are awarded up to a maximum of $3,000 and aimed at students who demonstrate both academic merit and financial need and are also prepared to promote study abroad opportunities in meaningful ways upon return to UAlbany and/ or in their post-graduate experience (for graduating seniors).
  • The Joan N. Savitt Scholarship for Study Abroad: Interested students must first apply for the World Within Reach Fund Scholarship. Qualified and eligible applicants will be contacted no later than November 1 and asked to submit an additional 250-word essay. Selections and notifications will occur no later than November 15.
