Fuerza Latina Honors Jeanette Altarriba
ALBANY, N.Y. (May 13, 2016) – Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Studies Jeanette Altarriba was recognized recently by the students of Fuerza Latina with the Dr. Carson Carr Award for her outstanding commitment to the advancement of Latino students and faculty.
The award was created to honor the legacy of Carson Carr, who directed UAlbany’s Educational Opportunity Program from 1985 to 2008. Carr was known for going above and beyond to ensure the success of disadvantaged students at the University. It is given each year at Fuerza Latina’s National Latino Collegiate conference to a person who exemplifies Carr’s ideals and who demonstrates the leadership that Fuerza Latina seeks to develop in its members. The group’s motto is servicio, unidad, y tradicion (Service, unity, and tradition).

“Dr. Altarriba is someone who understands what it is like to be a first-generation student,” said former Fuerza Latina President Stanley De La Cruz. “She understands what it is like to defend your place at an institution of higher learning. She is a person who is recognized for her scholarship and for embodying Great Dane values without forgetting where she came from. The enthusiasm she brings to her work and her excitement about interacting with and being a part of Fuerza Latina is something that is rarely found.”
Previous award honorees have included EOP administrators Maritza Martinez and Patrick Romain, as well as UAlbany Track & Field Coach Roberto Vives, and Latin American and Caribbean Studies administrator Librada Pimentel.
