Ripe for Growth
ALBANY, N.Y. (September 28, 2016) — Since announcing the redesignation of UAlbany’s East Campus as the Health Sciences Campus on September 12, Laura Schweitzer has not slowed down.
The vice president for health sciences and biomedical initiatives has been speaking far and wide to businesses and civic groups about the exciting potential for biomedical partnerships on the new campus.
And others agree that this area is ripe for growth. The Albany Business Review recently shared a report from U.S. News & World Report about how Albany ranks highly in the nation for tech job opportunities — number three behind San Francisco and San Jose/Silicon Valley.
On Monday, Schweitzer conducted an exclusive tour of the Health Sciences Campus for some 50 business leaders, policymakers and senior executives from leading companies. The tour served as a kick-off to Tuesday and Wednesday’s annual conference of the MedTech Association, the leading member-based trade association for the Bio/Med industry in New York.
Monday's campus tour included:
- Opening remarks in the Cancer Research Center’s Massry Conference Center by Schweitzer; Jessica Crawford, president of MedTech; Todd Little, president of corporate development tor Taconic; and Michael Williams, senior corporate counsel for Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.
- Visits on the Health Sciences Campus to:
- Neural Stem Cell Institute
- Pharmaceutical Research Institute
- School of Public Health for an undergraduate and graduate student poster session
- UAlbany Center for Innovation
- Integrated Tissue Dynamics
The attendees capped off their tour with a networking reception in the UAlbany Cancer Research Center atrium, where they continued to discuss key issues facing the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical technology industries.
The MedTech Conference concludes this afternoon in downtown Albany.
