ALBANY, N.Y. (March 9, 2017) — Unquestioned integrity, political astuteness, strategic thinking and a sense of humor — these are some of the traits UAlbany is looking for in its next president.

The Presidential Search Committee, after collecting extensive feedback from faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members, released a 21-page report Wednesday detailing the strengths and needs of the University, and the attributes sought in a president.

“The president will recognize the unique characteristics of UAlbany and will build upon the University’s considerable momentum by collaborating with the faculty, staff, students, alumni and senior leadership to advance the University,” the report says. “The president will be a capable delegator, a good listener, well organized, and visible on campus and in the community. The president must have a great passion for the role of public higher education and be equally passionate about UAlbany.”

Other attributes identified as being important in a new president are:

  • Successful experience as a strategic leader and the ability to execute large and ambitious plans
  • Broad executive skills and experience; a proven record of sound fiscal, organizational, and management practice
  • Demonstrated understanding of philanthropic fundraising, including significant involvement in a comprehensive campaign
  • A powerful affinity for, and commitment to, the mission and values of a public university

The entire report is available on the Presidential Search website.

The Search Committee is led by Michael J. Castellana, president and CEO of SEFCU and chair of the University Council, and is working with consultants Russell Reynolds Associates. Together they are researching the market to identify the best possible candidates and are actively seeking nominations from UAlbany and the extended community.

“We have started to receive nominations and anticipate that we will continue to do so,” Castellano said. “In the coming week, we will be placing advertisements in prominent online publications. We expect to build the pool of candidates during March and April.”

To nominate a candidate, send the name of the person and his or her institution or organization to Russell Reynolds Associates at [email protected].

The search committee will choose candidates to interview in early May. In early June, the names of three finalists will be forwarded to Chancellor Nancy Zimpher for her consideration. The SUNY Board of Trustees is expected to announce UAlbany’s next president in early July.
