And the Winner Is …
Video Awards Celebrate Living-Learning Communities
Fun and fancy is the spirit at last year's Video Awards ceremony. |
ALBANY, N.Y. (March 20, 2017) – They dress in their finest and walk the red carpet, followed by photo-hungry paparazzi. They sample from a chocolate fountain before taking their seats in the theater for the world premieres. And then comes the awards ceremony and the golden statuettes.
It’s not the Oscars. It’s the World Video Awards, an annual “all world” tradition for the Living-Learning Communities (L-LC), freshman or transfer communities based around majors or special interests. Different L-LCs or “worlds” submitted videos that sum up what it’s like to be a part of that community, whether it’s History or Digital Forensics, Community Service or Sustainability.

A panel of distinguished judges from the University were tasked with choosing winners in categories from best music to best video, and members of the World of Accounting L-LC will be delivering the results in briefcases. Announcers will ask for “envelopes, please” and hand out awards.
The whole show happens Wednesday, March 22, in the Performing Arts Center, and it’s open to the public. Get your photo taken during the reception, which starts at 7:30 in the Futterer Lounge. Screen all 20 of the videos starting at 8 in the PAC’s Main Theatre. Then watch as the winners are announced.
The whole event started as a “lame” idea for a movie night.
“Each semester we schedule an “all world” event, and I thought it would be fun to have a movie night,” said Linda Krzykowski, the assistant vice provost for student engagement. “I thought I’d rent a popcorn machine and show a movie, but the students said, ‘That’s so lame!’”
Pretty soon the students had a better idea. They’d make their own movies. They’d hold a competition. They’d dress up. This would be no movie night – this would be the Academy Awards.
That was four years ago. The event moved from the lecture centers to the PAC two years ago so the students could take advantage of the sweeping staircase for grand entrances and a proper theatre for screening their videos.
Candy parachutes? Mishaps? If it happened at the Oscars it’s likely to be spoofed at the 2017 World Video Awards.
