ALBANY, N.Y. (March 29, 2017) — Outstanding UAlbany students and organizations will be honored in a series of events running Thursday, March 30, through Sunday, April 2.
Michael Christakis, vice president of Student Affairs, said that bundling several awards programs into Recognition Weekend will make it easier for friends and families to celebrate student achievements.
“Recognition Weekend provides an opportunity to showcase, honor and celebrate outstanding student achievements across four well established awards programs – the Student Association’s Purple and Gold Awards, the Fraternity and Sorority Recognition Reception, the Spellman Achievement Awards and the President’s Awards for Leadership,” Christakis said.
“What were formerly awards programs spread out throughout the final weeks of the semester have been combined into one comprehensive, celebratory weekend.”
Events begin Thursday, 7-9 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom, with the Purple and Gold Awards, which recognize outstanding student organizations and their leaders for their dedication to improving both the University and the City of Albany. The awards are sponsored by the Student Association.
The Fraternity and Sorority Recognition Reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday in the Hall of Fame Room in SEFCU Arena. The reception recognizes chapters and members who make a positive impact as leaders, scholars and trendsetters, and is sponsored by Fraternity and Sorority Affairs.
The Spellman Awards will be presented a 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Campus Center Ballroom, with a reception following from 3-4 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge. The awards, sponsored by Intercultural Student Engagement, honor accomplishments of undergraduate students of African, Latino, Asian and Native American descent for academic achievement, community service and leadership.
The President’s Awards for Leadership will be presented from 2-3:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Campus Center Ballroom. The awards, sponsored by the Center for Leadership and Service, honor undergraduate and graduate students and organizations that have made significant contributions to enhance the quality of life at UAlbany.
“I am delighted to honor so many deserving student leaders for their impact on campus life and the surrounding community,” Christakis said. “Each of this year’s recipients demonstrates the remarkable achievements of our students and their ability to make a positive difference in and out of the classroom.”
