ALBANY. N.Y. (April 21, 2017) — The research and creative work of students representing 29 different degree programs will be on display when Undergraduate Research hosts the 14th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference on Friday, April 28, from 3 to 7:30 p.m. in the Lecture Center Concourse.
It is the largest University-wide event of its kind, notes Jeanette Altarriba, vice provost and dean for Undergraduate Education, who has championed the efforts to expand undergraduate research at UAlbany.
“Research is an essential portion of the University at Albany mission,” said Altarriba. "Undergraduate Research has worked to support and advance this by encouraging and facilitating undergraduate student participation in research, scholarship, and creative activities across the University.
“To further support this, we have developed a unique programming model to assist students in identifying, applying for, and achieving their goals within research, scholarship, and creative activities.”
Fields of scholarship represented in the conference will include Art History, Business, Human Biology, Psychology, Political Science, and Social Welfare.
“This conference showcases the many interesting, innovative, and important projects that result from such an experience across majors,” said Dr. Suraj Commuri, associate dean for Undergraduate Research. “The posters and presentations represent the students, but we also celebrate the faculty mentors and advisors who participate in fostering the total vibrant undergraduate research experience.”
Seunghyun Shin, a senior honors English major, presented at the conference last year and will do so again this time. “Presenting my research is part of presenting myself to people who are also in academia,” he said “Learning about them and presenting myself are important for me not only as a student but also as a young man. I want to make the last good memory before my graduation.”
Shin, along with 19 other students, will be presented at the conference with a Presidential Award for Undergraduate Research.
“We are thrilled that the conference and engagement in research this year has increased,” said Altarriba. “This is a testament to the work that our faculty members are doing to provide opportunities for students to learn skills in research design and implementation across our curriculum.”
