ALBANY, N.Y. (April 10, 2018) – UAlbany’s atmospheric scientists are once again inviting the Capital Region community to participate in a free, fun-filled day of interactive activities that celebrate the importance of protecting our planet.
The 6th annual Family Earth Day, organized by Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences (DAES) and the Office of Environmental Sustainability, will be held on Saturday, April 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Uptown Campus. It includes a wide range of demonstrations and activities geared towards educating children about our atmosphere, the environment and sustainability.
The UAlbany community, along with local students, K-12, and their families are invited to attend.
“Our annual Family Earth Day event is an opportunity to remind the local community how important it is to keep our planet healthy and clean,” said Junhong Wang, DAES research associate professor and event organizer. “These children are our future STEM leaders. We try to make our demonstrations and activities as interactive and engaging as possible to prove learning about Earth science can be fun.”
The day includes hands-on demonstrations and activities, including:
- Cloud Identifier
- Storm Surge
- Solar Oven
- Spectrum Glasses
- Earth Day Caterpillars
- Light Switch Reminder Activity
- Telescopes/Solar Observing
In addition, there will be a weather balloon launch, rotating tank experiment and a Coriolis Machine to illustrate the Earth’s rotation.
Weather Friends are also returning. These friendly superheroes will be engaging with children to make the science experiments more memorable. They will be handing out trading cards, signing autographs, and teaching kids about the hazards of severe weather and the steps that young people can take to keep themselves and their families safe.
Family Earth Day is sponsored by the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, the Office of Environmental Sustainability, the Division for Research, and the Sustainability Graduate Student Organization.
