ALBANY, N.Y. (April 24, 2018) — UAlbany’s excellence in research and scholarship will have its special day next Tuesday, when the first Celebration of Scholarship takes place from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Campus Center Multi-Purpose Room.
More than 40 selected works of scholarship will be presented from 2 to 4 p.m., with a reception featuring the honorees from 4 to 6 pm. Instead of an awards ceremony, the event will be a celebration of the success attained by 24 scholars: students, faculty and staff.
“This recognition event aligns well with the goals of the University Strategic Plan, as the scholarship on display here reflects student success, research, diversity, international and cross-disciplinary collaborations and community engagement,” said James A. Dias, Vice President for Research.
“What better way to celebrate than to showcase several of the exemplary achievements of our researchers, on all levels, in terms of the citations of their books, articles and other publications in top-tier journals and success in obtaining extramural research grants to support students, postdocs and research.”
Organizers stress that the number of scholars celebrated on Tuesday are “a very small representative sample” of the high caliber and diverse scholarship that is to be found throughout the University’s school and colleges.
“We shall see on display precisely the type of cutting-edge research and high-caliber scholarly activity that elevates UAlbany to be among the top-tier research universities in the country,” said James R. Stellar, Senior Vice President and Provost. “Clearly, we are attracting top-level faculty, researchers, and students. Their ingenuity and perseverance has put UAlbany on an upward trajectory.
“I thank them and want them to know that UAlbany will continue to support their efforts.”
Increasingly noteworthy is the growth in scholarship achievements at UAlbany from year to year — and especially among the undergraduate and graduate students who are already participating in and helping to advance cutting-edge research and their field.
“Our faculty and student scholars are passionate about their work.” said Satyen Kumar, Associate Vice President for Research. “I sense their enthusiasm about research in conversation with them and in the language of their grant applications. This event provides an opportunity for all of us to share their excitement and applaud them for the prestige they bring to the University.”
