Heaton Named CIO

Brian Heaton, previously the Director of Enterprise Services, has been appointed Chief Information Officer at the University at Albany.

ALBANY, N.Y. (August 22, 2018) -- Brian Heaton has been appointed as Chief Information Officer of the University at Albany.

An action-oriented leader with more than 20 years of experience working in higher education, Brian brings a rich mix of technical acumen, project and operations management, and a strong customer focus to the organization.

Brian previously served as Director of Enterprise Infrastructure Services at UAlbany, where he provided oversight for the development, implementation, and ongoing management of the data center, network and server infrastructure, storage, databases and middleware, monitoring, business continuity, and disaster recovery planning.

Previous roles in Information Technology Services (ITS) include serving as the organization’s first Portfolio Manager; Associate Director of the Messaging and Collaboration Services team; Associate Director of Systems Management and Operations, and Senior System Administrator in the ITS Windows Systems Group.

Prior to joining ITS, Brian worked as both a desktop support specialist in The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Computing, and image analysis lab manager in the Department of Geography & Planning at the University.

An active member of the higher education IT community, Brian has participated in several EDUCAUSE programs and events. He is certified in Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) at the Foundation level. Brian holds a PMP certification from the Project Management Institute, and is a graduate of the SUNY SAIL Institute, a system-wide leadership program.

A proud alum, Brian has a bachelor’s degree in biology, a Graduate Certificate in geographic information systems and spatial analysis, and a master’s degree in geography from UAlbany.
