A Robust UAlbany Welcome
The campus schedules a jam-packed series of events this weekend for incoming students. |
ALBANY, N.Y. (August 22, 2018) — A purple and gold welcome mat goes out to our newest Great Danes this weekend, with a series of events offering a sneak peek into the greatness that lies ahead at UAlbany through a wealth of academic, cultural, recreational and civic opportunities.
“Welcome Week is a series of events intended to acclimate students to UAlbany,” said Michael Christakis, vice president for Student Affairs. “From Convocation on Friday to Great DANEtopia on Sunday, events are designed to build community, provide opportunities to meet new people and to celebrate the beginning of each student’s collegiate journey.”
Friday
- Events kick off in a formal manner with Convocation from 4 to 5 p.m. in the SEFCU Arena.
- It’s then time to relax and intermingle over great food at the President’s Picnic, which runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Campus Center Small Fountain.
- Newcomers can get their first taste of NCAA Division I competition by proceeding to Casey Stadium for the first home game of the men’s soccer team, as UAlbany goes toe to toe with Marist.
- Friday’s happenings aren’t over, however, because beginning at 9 p.m. the UAlbany Programming Board hosts the Third Annual First Night Fest: Silent Disco on the Science Library Lawn. It’s a most interesting spin to a dance party, complete with three different stations, giving you the chance to connect with many other UAlbany students who like the same music you do. Warning: get there on time because headphones run out quickly.
The night is aglow at a past Candlelighting Ceremony by the Main Fountain. |
Saturday
- The morning gives you a chance to get your bearings, literally, at UAlbany, because from 11 a.m. to noon, Join the UAlbany Driving Force conducts UAlbany Tunnel Tours, taking off from Collins Circle on the Entry Plaza. Become familiar with how to navigate your way around the campus during the winter using our underground passageways.
- Following the tour, a reception will take place in the Campus Center’s Transfer & Commuter Lounge.
- From there, you can head over to the Lecture Center Concourse for a golden opportunity to “Explore UAlbany.” There, you’re bound to find new topics that interest you — even if they’re totally unrelated to your intended major. You could also win $100 toward the purchase of textbooks.
- After dinner, the Welcome Candlelighting Ceremony begins at 9 p.m. at the Main Fountain, and it will be followed by fireworks.
Sunday
- Finally, on Sunday is Great DANEtopia, a chance to find out about most of the cultural and civic organizations on campus — and maybe join some. The friendly tablers will be more than willing to assist you, from 4 to 7 p.m. on the Entry Plaza.
