ALBANY, N.Y. (Aug. 28, 2018) – University at Albany President Havidán Rodríguez on Sunday welcomed Zhuo Zhi, president of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) in China, to campus for the signing of a memorandum of understanding or MOU between the two institutions.
The MOU is to renew the collaborative relationship between UAlbany and SWUFE established in 2013 for the development and operation of the Confucius Institute. Professor Youqin Huang of Geography and Planning is executive director of the Confucius Institute.
The MOU establishes a Board of Advisors composed of members from both UAlbany and SWUFE, who are responsible for overseeing the operation of the Institute.
Under the agreement, SWUFE will provide visiting scholars and instructors in Chinese language and culture each year. In addition, it will receive student groups from the Institute, and will welcome UAlbany faculty who visit, teach and make research presentations at SWUFE in Chengdu, China.
UAlbany, for its part, will host cultural and academic programs provided by the Institute. The University will ensure that academic freedom is protected in all activities of the Institute.
UAlbany is having additional conversations with SWUFE on a dual degree program that would bring SWUFE students to UAlbany. Interest has been expressed in building relationships with UAlbany’s School of Business and the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy.
The Confucius Institute aims to promote the understanding of China, and to facilitate the academic and cultural exchange and collaboration between UAlbany and SWUFE.
