Rebuilding Puerto Rico

ALBANY, N.Y. (Sept. 4, 2018) – With the return of the final deployment of students and volunteers, Gov. Andrew Cuomo shared some impressive numbers to illustrate the success of this summer’s “NY Stands with Puerto Rico Recovery and Rebuilding Initiative.”

  • More than 650 SUNY and CUNY students, as well as skilled labor volunteers, traveled to the island
  • Volunteers logged nearly 41,000 hours to clean, restore, and rebuild homes
  • The goal to renovate 150 homes was far exceeded, with a total of 178 homes restored

In late May, 30 students from UAlbany’s College of Emergency Preparedness Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC), along with two staff volunteers, led the way, as part of the first group of students to depart.
