ALBANY, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2018) – UAlbany’s Performing Arts Center will host the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company this Thursday evening for a collaborative performance that will feature work by current faculty and professors emeriti from the University’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).
The event will take place at the Center on the University’s Uptown Campus at 7:30p.m.
Included in the program is Texture of the Whole, a project created during the dance company’s semester-long residency at UAlbany in the spring of 2014. The piece was choreographed in collaboration with Keith Earle, an associate professor of Physics in CAS.
Earle said working with dancers to connect the scientific to the artistic has influenced how he both approaches and teaches laws in physics.
“If you look at a figure in a scientific journal or in a video, you’re several steps removed from the actual phenomenon, but it’s a different experience if you can actually see something moving in three dimensions,” he said. “Who better than dancers to represent movement through space in time?”
Also performing at this week’s event is Pierre Joris, a professor emeritus of English. Joris, who retired from the University in 2012, will perform an original work of poetry for the dance Pierre’s Words.
Joris, who now lives in Brooklyn, said it was important for him to return to the Capital Region to honor and celebrate Ellen Sinopoli, the troupe’s artistic director, whom he collaborated with for multiple performances during his 20 years at the University.
Others whose work is included in the program are Joel Chadabe, professor emeritus of Music, and Thom O’Connor, professor emeritus of Art. The Capitol Trio, ensemble-in-residence, will also perform for a dance that will premiere for the occasion.
Advance tickets are $10 for students, UAlbany faculty and staff or $15 for the general public. For reservations or for more information, contact the Box Office at [email protected] or at 518-442-3997.
CAS, University Auxiliary Services and the University at Albany Foundation provided support for this week’s event.
25th Anniversary for CAS
The performance will kick off the 25th anniversary celebration of CAS, a month-long series of campus events to commemorate the College’s founding in 1993, according to Edelgard Wulfert, dean of CAS.
"I'm extremely proud of these collaborations between our faculty and the incredibly talented and visionary Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company," Wulfert said. "The creation of these works spans the last 25 years, but this is the first time they are being performed together in the same program. I believe it is the perfect way to kick off our anniversary year, by showcasing the depth of creative talents across disciplines housed in the College of Arts and Sciences."
