ALBANY, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2018) — UAlbany celebrated Homecoming with a weekend full of exciting events on campus.
The weekend kicked off with a welcome reception on Friday, Oct. 19, at the Main Fountain on the Uptown Campus, where students, faculty/staff, families, alumni and community members gathered to celebrate. The reception also served as the launch of the largest fundraising initiative in University history, “This Is Our Time.” The campaign, which is seeking to raise $150 million, is intended to help fund research, create more educational opportunities, and expand financial aid for students. More than $104 million has already been raised from donations, allowing the creation of 137 new endowed scholarships.
UAlbany’s Theatre Department put on several performances of “Godspell,” a musical by “Wicked” creator Stephen Schwartz. The cast, made up of students, performed from Wednesday, Oct. 17, through Sunday, Oct. 21. The immersive and interactive musical depicts a more modern retelling of Jesus Christ’s biblical parables through song, dance, and storytelling.
The main event was on Saturday, Oct. 20, when 7,000-plus fans watched UAlbany Football battle Towson at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. School spirit was in the air at Great Dane Game Day, as fans and families gathered to tailgate, cheer on the team and proudly wear their purple and gold. The halftime featured performances from the Marching Great Danes, as well as the UAlbany cheer and dance teams. Although the game resulted in a loss, the community remained full of spirited celebration in support of the team.
