Be a Quitter!

At the Great American Smokeout, you can find out ways to quit smoking or provide tips to others if you've quit already.

ALBANY, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2018) — As the University gets closer to officially becoming a smoke- and tobacco-free campus in the New Year, an important opportunity for faculty, staff and students to kick the habit appears on the horizon.

The Great American Smokeout occurs the third Thursday of each November. It’s a national observance designed to highlight the importance of making the decision to quit the use of tobacco.

This year, EAP — the Employee Assistance Program — will be collaborating with the Student Health Services and Counseling and Psychological Services to offer extra support to encourage our campus community to participate in the Great American Smokeout. On Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., faculty, staff and students seeking assistance to quit can pick up smoking cessation information along with a “craving kit” to support their efforts near Starbucks in Campus Center West Extension and in the Campus Center Lobby on the Podium Level.

The dates are Nov. 14 and 15, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m

Once in effect, the new tobacco and smoke-free policy will apply to students, faculty, staff and people on campus, regardless of the purpose of their visit. All events hosted by UAlbany and by outside groups in University facilities will also be tobacco-free.

Already Kicked the Habit?

Are you a former smoker? Congratulations on this accomplishment! Do you have tips or words of encouragement you’d like to share with other members of the campus community who are trying to quit? Send your comments Brenda Seckerson at [email protected]. Let’s make this a community effort and support those who are taking the steps to let go of tobacco!
