Series Offers Professional Training for Nonprofits

ALBANY, N.Y. (Nov. 14, 2019) — The University at Albany has introduced a new professional capacity-building program for area nonprofits.

Nonprofit University, developed and run by the Institute of Nonprofit Leadership and Community Development at UAlbany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, in partnership with United Way of the Greater Capital Region, offers a full spectrum of workshops focused on issues and topics of importance to nonprofit managers and professionals.

Responding to needs identified by the nonprofit community and taught by UAlbany faculty and area experts, Nonprofit U has more than a dozen workshops planned for various levels of nonprofit professionals, from entry-level to CEOs and board members, said Pam Skripak, executive director of the Institute of Nonprofit Leadership and Community Development.

“The idea is to offer granular trainings on all aspects of nonprofit operations and management, whether it be how to design and boost a social media campaign, build diversity on your board, or start a social enterprise to boost revenue,” Skripak said. “There is a real need for professional capacity building that nonprofits often don’t have the time or resources to provide.”

The workshops will be offered year-round and are designed to be interactive and engaging. Broad topics include strategic planning and implementation, grant writing, board development, financial management, leadership development, technology, and compliance. New trainings and topics will continue to be added.

The first workshop is set for Dec. 12. It will be taught by Michael Buckley, one of Nonprofit U’s dozen founding faculty, and will focus on overcoming common roadblocks to nonprofit success.

Organizations may register staff for individual workshops or can purchase full or partial subscriptions at a discounted rate. Subscriptions are priced on a sliding scale and are fully transferable to whichever members of the organization will most benefit from the training being offered. Nonprofit University is part of the Institute of Nonprofit Leadership and Community Development’s suite of capacity-building programs, which include:

• ENLA, the Emerging Nonprofit Leadership Accelerator, which offers midlevel and new executive directors six months of intensive nonprofit leadership training and mentorship; and
• Emerging Issues in the Nonprofit Sector, a seminar series that engages national experts for full- and half-day seminars on significant issues impacting nonprofits today.

The Institute of Nonprofit Leadership and Community Development is a collaborative effort of UAlbany’s Rockefeller College; the College of Emergency Planning, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity; the schools of Business, Public Health and Social Welfare; and Albany Law School.

ENLA is a partnership between the Institute of Nonprofit Leadership and Community Development and the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. The program is supported by MVP Health Care, the Michaelson Family Fund and the Linda G. Toohey Fund of the Community Foundation.
