ALBANY, N.Y. (March 3, 2020) – An international expert on social development and social work will give the 2020 Dr. Katharine Briar-Lawson Lecture on the topic of economic integration of vulnerable communities at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, in the Performing Arts Center.
Abye Tasse, the chief of mission at the Ministry of Social and Humanitarian Affairs in the Republic of Congo, will offer initial findings from a novel project focused on social and economic integration in communities riven by civil unrest and persecution based on gender, race, culture, religion and poverty.
The lecture series is designed to educate the campus and surrounding communities on a broad range of topics related to the research and practice of social work. This year’s lecture coincides with the School of Social Welfare’s celebration of National Social Workers Month.
Dean of the School of Social Welfare Lynn Warner, said, “We are proud to welcome Abye Tasse to the University at Albany campus. At a time when our University, and indeed the country, is challenged to fully embrace diversity and inclusion goals, we have much to learn from Dr. Tasse’s ambitious social change initiatives.”
Tasse was president of the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) from 2004-2008. He has led the Global Agenda, which unites the work of three international organizations: IASSW, the International Federation of Social Workers, and the International Council on Social Welfare.
Born in Ethiopia, at a young age he was forced to flee amid civic turmoil after the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie. He made his way to France where he claimed political asylum and eventually became a French citizen. These personal challenges have informed his scholarship. He is one of the foremost scholars on migration and social work, and has published and lectured extensively around the globe on this topic.
Advance registration is requested for those attending The Katharine Briar-Lawson Lecture, which is free and open to the public.
