Summer Youth Technology Institute
Prepares Urban Youth for Tech Valley
By Greta Petry (October 8, 2004)
The Center for Urban Youth and Technology (CUYT)
held the fifth annual summer institute at the
School of Education from July 6-23. With 50
students participating, this was the largest
summer institute to date.
The focus was the Capital Region Tech Valley
initiative. Students attended workshops by the
National Weather Service, the Center for Initiatives
in Pre-College Education (CIPCE) at Rensselaer,
and the Department of Transportation.
CUYT is committed to ensuring that urban youth
and their parents are directly included in this
initiative, so that they can see and be a part
of the new and exciting work force and college
opportunities, said Associate Professor of
Educational Theory and Practice and CUYT Director
Joseph Bowman, Jr., Ph.D. We want to make sure
that the business and educational institutions
know that there are urban students and parents
who have an interest in these fields and are
preparing for their futures now.
