University Police Department Hosts Active Shooter Instructor Course

ALBANY, N.Y. (August 18, 2008) -- With recent events highlighting the need for quick-response campus law enforcement groups, the University at Albany Police Department (UPD) is sponsoring a Train the Trainer course to address active shooter incidents and major critical events that occur within University settings.The 48-hour intensive course is designed to provide patrol officers with techniques and information necessary to plan and implement thorough ongoing training at their respective agencies. The scenario-based course covers such topics as:
� History
� Equipment
� Mental Preparation
� Human Decision Cycle
� Exterior/Open Air Tactics
� Breaching Setups
� Hallway Movement
� Room Entries
� Searching a Room
� Medical Contingencies
The University at Albany Police Department has been training officers in Immediate Action Response to active shooter incidents since 2000. Since 2006, the training has included deployment of patrol rifles and "live-fire" exercises.
This year the Department is sponsoring the Train the Trainer course for numerous law enforcement agencies including Albany County Sheriff�s Department, Bethlehem PD, Cohoes PD, Coeymans PD, Maryland Transportation Authority, Orange County PD, Saratoga County PD, and SUNY Plattsburgh PD. The course was developed by A.S.T. � Active Shooter Trainer � L.L.C., and the lead instructor is Nick Minzghor, manager and owner of A.S.T.
